Dumpster Dive Rescue

Hooray for beautiful spring weather! There is something about the sunshine and mid-50 degree weather that just makes me want to clean the car out - which is exactly what Lynlee and I did this morning.
We filled Tommy 2.0* up with gas this morning and, after checking the weather report, decided to get a car wash as well. Lynlee LOVES going through the car wash! Now that she's over her fear of being drenched while going through it** she gets excited to watch it do it's thing and get all the dirt off of our car.
When we got home we decided that we would take Windex and paper towels and clean off our windows on the inside before putting our new license plates on it. Lyn was such a big helper, as usual. :) I brought a bag outside with us to put any car garbage as well as the used paper towels in and when we were finished window washing, I asked the wee one to take it over to the dumpster and throw it away. "Sure mom!" And off she trotted. I stood watching my sweet girl [try to] skip over and stand on her tip toes to toss the trash in. As she got it up to the rim of the dumpster I noticed that she was holding her little toy Cinderella ("Cinderbella" as Lynlee calls her) in her hand and before I could tell her to stop and put the toy down, in went everything, Cinderbella and all.
Uh oh.
Instant tears as she realized what had happened.
Heartbreak as I saw her happy face fall and her knees buckle at the thought of losing her very special plastic friend.
Disgust as I quickly thought through our options and realized what very well was going to happen.
Yup, one of us was going to have to rescue Cinderbella.
From the DUMPSTER.
This toy better love us.
I walked over, wiped the tears from the cheeks of my heartbroken 4 year old, and peeked into the dumpster. Oh good - there was hardly anything in it. Thank you garbage men for doing your duty!
Well, see, I'm 5 1/2 months pregnant, so there's no way I could climb in and out of there on my own. Lynlee and me, we're a team, so I told her that if she wanted Cinderbella back then we were going to have to work together...and that she was the one who was going to have to go in to rescue her friend.
L: "You're going to put me in there?" eyeing me and the dumpster suspiciously
Me: "Yes, but just long enough to get Cinderbella, then I'll lift you back out."
L: "Okay!"
It took a lot of convincing. :p
As I'm lowering my child into the dumpster, a couple we know from our ward pulls up to the building next to us. And I know they saw us because they parked facing our direction. And waved when they got out. Of course. Because that's how perfect timing works. I made sure they also saw me pull her back out. Just because I'm making a new one doesn't mean that I'm done with this first one. Haha! And when we had completed our mission I made sure to point out that we were involved in a very serious rescue operation when they pulled up. We were told it looked like a very intense situation. :p
After a good scrub down of the three of us (I knew where that toy had been!) Lynlee and Cinderbella were happy to play together once again. As we finished getting our car Spring-ready there were a few more things I asked her to put in the dumpster for me, but this time each time she left her precious plastic pal in my care as she made an adorable attempt to skip over to the dumpster.

*My first car was a white 1983 Toyota Celica GT that I named Tommy. Since our new car is a [much newer] white Toyota, it seemed only fitting that we call this one Tommy 2.0. :)

**There was a traumatizing albeit hilarious incident with the car wash and another vehicle that we owned that involved Lynlee. Apparently there was a dent in the frame on one of the back passenger sides that we didn't know was there which left a gap between the frame and the top of the door. When we first got that car we all got buckled in and took it to SuperSonic to get a car wash and get it cleaned out. As our car got soaked with water there was a surprised scream from the backseat - the car wasn't the only thing getting soaked! Poor thing got her own little shower and was completely drenched even though we unbuckled her as fast as we could. So now every time we go to a car wash she has to ask if there's a chance that that might happen again.

Some Summer Stuff

I'm slacking again, I know. But I have a good reason for it!
I started my Chem 1 class and the lab that accompanies it about 2 weeks ago. This wouldn't be so bad if I didn't also have 2 other classes I'm working on plus this is the summer semester which means I have approximately 7 weeks to go through an entire Chemistry class plus the lab plus my two other classes and get [at least] passing grades...plus be a mommy and a wifey and enjoy some summer and all that that entails. Whew ok, now that I've got that off my chest I can breathe and update you a bit. It will be mostly with pictures (theoretically) - I hope you don't mind!

Marilyn's birthday was the 16th of June and I thought it would be fun if we could go do something together instead of me just buying something for her. (For those of you who don't know, Marilyn has been my best friend since 5th grade and is also the namesake of my beautiful little girl. She's kinda special to me.) So we went to Color Me Mine! It was pretty sweet :) And it got even sweeter when Chris got off work early and surprised us with some Jamba Juice! What a great guy!
Afterwards we went to Decadence in Orem. I am in love with this place. It's a little café that makes coffee drinks out of cocoa beans instead of coffee beans. I'm a Mormon and therefore I don't drink coffee so this is an awesome alternative. Also, they have AMAZING sandwiches and desserts like gelato (some of the best I've ever tasted), gourmet cupcakes, and delicious gooey cookie/gelato incredibleness that Marilyn and I got when we went. If you're ever in the area call me up and we will go!
Also, here is a coupon from citydeals.com for them: http://www.citydeals.com/decadence-cafe-12-gift-certificate-deal.html?location=7112. You're welcome :)

at the café
I watched my friend Dana's little girl a few weeks ago while she and her husband biked 75 miles to train for LOTOJA in September. I have great respect for them; this is something I would never attempt.
Camryn is just 4 days younger than Lynlee so it was really fun to see all the similarities and differences in the way they behaved and played together. That's all I really have to say on that, please enjoy some adorable pictures :)
not 2 seconds before I snapped this Zoë  was sniffing her nose
love the tiptoes

here they are in cahoots
obviously they didn't want me overhearing

I don't know what they were talking about but it sure was making them giggle...which made me giggle...which made one of them giggle harder, setting the other off in more giggles...yeah, that's the good life.

Lynlee runs around the house all the time yelling "daddy!" Have I mentioned how little kids voices just melt my heart?? This girl sure loves her daddy.

Speaking of daddy, here's how he now cuts onions in the Bross household.
not a tear in his eye afterwards!
Nicole has stayed the night a few times so far this summer. I love it when this girl comes over! We always have a blast (we are currently obsessed with the game Bohnanza). One night we took a trip up to the mountains and played with fire and yummy food. Also, my new gig as a photo-bomber took off without a hitch this weekend.

I gave her a marshmallow
it kept her busy for a bit

plus it was just adorable watching her munch on it
On June 22nd we got to go to the Princess Festival at Thanksgiving Point! We got some free tickets, courtesy of Marilyn (perks of having your best friend be an event coordinator (*sniffle* my best friend's all grown up!)). Nicole, Lynlee, and myself plus my sister Amanda and my two nieces, Olivia and Kelsey, all got to enjoy this cute event. The weather wasn't too hot and the girls had fun meeting all the princesses.

we got to ride in the princess carriage!

Lynlee was super cranky most of the morning

I LOVE this. Princess Cinderella and Prince Charming
Olivia and Captain Hook

she finally warmed up and started carrying her princess autograph book around

So that's what we've been up to so far this summer, not counting swimming adventures, play dates, homework, exploring outside, fireworks (Lynlee has a love/hate relationship with fireworks), homework, and the rest of everyday life. This summer is so great because the wee one is always wanting to discover new thins around her and I just love seeing that bright little spark in her eyes every time we do something new. Sometimes it takes 15 minutes to walk the normally 3 minute walk to the park because we pause to talk about plants or follow a bug on the sidewalk but that's ok, we enjoy taking the extra time to stop and smell the roses - of which there are plenty of on our way to the park.
I caught her just staring at all the book titles on the shelf one day
she is her father's child

we might have enough fridge letters
maybe
I love how much this kid loves books

this is Lynlee's great great grandma, who is 96 years old
I came around the corner this day to find her helping Nannie to her seat :)

A Longish Post About A Good Weekend

This last weekend was a really good weekend all 3 days. I like it when that happens.

Friday night we went to my 5 year high school reunion. There was a lot of hub bub about this event and expressions of the lameness of being reunited so soon/at all and that's ok: for some, high school was a terrible experience and they would rather do something much more unpleasant than visit with certain people and return to that place of torture. Which makes me sad because a lot of the people who were saying such things I was hoping to see again.
I was looking forward to going for awhile and I'm really glad that I did. I talked to people that I was really good friends with back in the day and I talked with people that I wasn't close with at all when we were all teenagers. A few things I caught myself thinking during and afterwards:
  • Some people never change. But some people do. Not entirely, but some things.
  • It's nice to be a grown up. Not always, but it beats being a teenager.
  • Let bygones be bygones could never be more applicable than at a high school reunion.
  • I forgot how much I like socializing. When you become a mommy you have the tendency to lose track of yourself and the world outside your own home but I was reminded on Friday just how much I like being friendly and talking to different people.
  • I have some really good friends. Someone made note of the fact that I'm still really good friends with the same few people I was really good friends with 5 years ago and I think that is the coolest thing. As cheesy as it is, I believe in best friends forever.
some of these good friends I speak of
this picture was taken our senior year
  • I love people.
  • I have a very supportive husband. He wanted to come with me even after I warned him he'd probably be pretty bored because he didn't know anyone. Silly me though, I forgot that Chris is Chris and he is friendly and likes to talk to people. And he did talk to a few people, but mostly he just let me do my thing and hung out. I felt really bad about this until he pointed out to me that at those times he was able to play with Lynlee and have some time with her. What a softie ;)
Saturday I was able to get crafty after Chris went to work and prepare his Father's Day gift. I really enjoy making new things! Not that it was anything big, but I still had fun (pictures below if you're interested).
That night Lynlee and I went with Marilyn to see a community play called Studio 71. This play holds a special place in our hearts: we were in the original cast of it 9 years ago. If you didn't know us as teenagers I should mention here that these community plays were our life when we were younger. Twice a year for 3 years (4 years for Marilyn) we would dance and sing our little hearts out on stage after weeks of rehearsals and fun times with the other cast members. We had inside jokes galore that we still giggle about and Marilyn and I have spent countless hours reminiscing and re-watching the recorded tapes. We were obsessed. But what better way for a young adult to spend all those hours of free time? I really think more kids should get involved with things like this instead of some things they get involved in.
It was so weird to be in the audience while watching that play. I kept thinking I had missed my cue and was supposed to be skipping onto the stage or screaming and running from the shark (you had to be there) but no, this time it was time to be sitting on the grass on the hill (which was much greener and softer in our day) and cheering for the little 6 year old who just made her musical debut.
We had to represent, so Marilyn and I wore our shirts from when we were in Studio 71. Needless to say they've been revamped and were different for this production of the play. Afterwards we snuck up to the stage and got a picture in front of the sign (also revamped). It was so fun to see Wendy, Gwyneth, and Peggy again (the director, script writer, and choreographer - they are the same people who were doing this when we were), as well as some other friendly faces from our past as well.

Me, Gwyneth, and Marilyn
Sunday was Father's Day! Chris is a wonderful father to our little girl and just when I think I couldn't love him more, I find more reasons for why I do.
a cheesy shirt and a goodie bag with daddy treats
I made the bag part :)

The Human Sponge

Alright alright, I know it and you know it: I am a slacker when it comes to blogging. What happened? I was doing great and then poof! Fell off the face of the earth. Sorry 'bout that!

Have you ever noticed that children are like human sponges. When they reach a certain age they figuratively soak up everything around them and spit it back out. I've always heard this but very recently am learning firsthand the truth of it.
Lynlee is now one week shy of 17 months old and she is a human sponge. There are the things we've been actively trying to teach her (say please and thank you, dipping food into sauces, etc) but there are also a number of things we've noticed her doing that we haven't consciously been trying for:
  • We've all had a fun month of being sick and have been blowing our noses a lot. I now need to put the tissues up high and close bathroom doors to keep toilet paper safe because she feels the need to blow her nose every 5 minutes. She then proceeds to use the same paper product to start cleaning everything (for the record, we blow our noses and clean surfaces with completely separate materials.)
  • We give the cats a squirt with the water bottle if they are being naughty. Lynlee walks around after them with the water bottle making her own squirting noises as she is still trying to master the squeezing of the squirting trigger.
  • We have some shoelaces we dangle about to play with the cats. She gets a hold of them and terrorizes the poor souls as she screams in delight and runs after them, waiving the laces high. They either run or lie down and cower, as demonstrated below.
  • Talking on the phone. This is the cutest! I've given her my old flip phones to play with and the other day she had a full conversation on it, complete with pauses to let the other person speak and giggles at what they said.
My favorite copycat moment so far happened yesterday.
Lynlee and I were playing on the stairs when I got a tickle in my nose and sneezed. She promptly said what I thought was "bless you" (sounded more like "bess oo") but there's no way, I thought, she's way too young for that. A few seconds later I sneezed again and this time there was no mistake. "bess oo." Little kid voices melt my heart. I said thank you as I wondered in amazement how a child only 16 months old could connect two things like that in her mind and formulate the appropriate polite response all within a second after it happened. I felt excited that in spite of having weak parents such as Chris and I, our daughter is observing things around her and learning. I giggled to myself that I was having all these thoughts race through my mind while she had already moved on and was picking at a piece of loose carpet on the stair.
A third time, "Achoo!"
"bess oo momma."
"Thank you Lynlee."

Day 3 of 30

Hi all, I hope you're having a great week so far!
Mine started off in a different sort of way, one that I totally didn't see coming. See, my birthday is one month from Monday (3 days ago) and see, I am super excited about it. I'm one of those people who loves their birthday; I am excited to be alive and it's fun to celebrate! Also, my birthday is on Thanksgiving day this year - how sweet is that?
So anyways, like I said, Monday, October 22nd came and BAM! Surprise! The fact that I was surprised says A LOT about my dear hubby because, bless his heart, he is horrible about keeping secrets. Usually he will drop me hints that I figure out quickly but this time his hint was cryptic enough that I was in the dark up until he decided to tell me more.
Every day for the next 30 days (starting this last Monday) I will have a mini surprise. Chris has planned it all out and knows what we're going to do each day leading up to my birthday. Woo!! Disgruntlingly though [is that a word?...it is now!], he's being really good about not letting on what each mini surprise is. The suspense is killing me!
So here we are, on day 3 of 30, and so far I've been having a blast!
Day 1: Massage. So relaxing.
Day 2: Video game tournament. I totally owned in case you were wondering. However, if we had played Halo I can assure you that this would in no way have happened.
Day 3: Learn a new skill. We decided to learn how to twirl a pen between our fingers with one smooth motion. You know those kids in high school that would sit there in class doing this and you would try, fail, and attempt to still look cool (without succeeding)? This was always my predicament. But no more!...kind of. We can both get it about 2 or 3 times out of 10 now. That's definitely nowhere near the coolness of this guy, but it's a start.

On an unrelated note, Lynlee had her 9 month appointment last week. Our little one is now in the 10th percentile for weight and the 70th for height. Tall and skinny! And squirmy! She crawls all over now to wherever her little heart desires and pulls herself up to stand anywhere she can. It's really cute: I wake up most mornings now to see a smiling Lynlee head and little waving arms peeking out over the top of her crib. Melts my heart. I love her SO much!
silly girl! wow - 9 months old already!

Lynlee and her first piece of mail! This is her reading the front to me

How Did I Miss That?!

This apparently is a game I have been playing with myself and the world around me for the last day or two. It's very frustrating actually. This is how it's played: exciting things happen and somehow I miss them. Grr...
Exciting moment missed #1: One of my best friend's little girl turned one on Thursday. Her party was on Sunday at 3pm, right? Right. I've been looking forward to this ever since I heard about it and have been planning on watching her party via webcam (they live in Oklahoma right now so her smart hubby figured out how to set it up this way so family and friends out of the state could still be involved). At 2:58 on Sunday I turn on the computer and, omitting my technical difficulties here, got the live video feed up on the screen. I could see sweet little Mia across the room, sitting in her high chair, eating something. Then I saw someone else come into view and give Erica (my friend) a hug and say goodbye to her. "Gee," I thought, "how sad - they're not going to even stay for her party and watch her do the cake or anything?" Then it hit me - 3pm in Oklahoma. That would be Central Time Zone not Mountain Time Zone. They are an hour ahead of us here in Utah. So really, the party was already over and Miss Mia was sitting across the room munching on her banana birthday cake. How did I miss that?!
*Note that the baby in the pictures is not Mia.

Exciting moment missed #2: Yesterday morning I woke up at about 6:30 like I do every morning (thanks to my alarm clock named Zoe), let the kitty out, and went back to bed. About an hour later I could hear Zoe outside our bedroom window meowing to come inside. Then I heard a rustling in the leaves. And a pounce! I opened my eyes and put on my glasses and found her attacking a praying mantis in our window well. She would bat at it and it would strike back at her (it looked something like this). I shook Chris awake and told him what was happening then raced upstairs to open the window and get Zoe inside. Right when I reached the top of the stairs he called for me to hurry back and see what was happening. When I got down there poor Zoe had the mantis attached to her whiskers and she was trying to shake it off; apparently a moment before it had somehow got on top of her head! Chris said she was trying desperately to shake it off the top of her head and it slid down the side and held fast to her whiskers. How did I miss that?! She gave up after he let go and came inside pretty quickly and we found him dead a few minutes later. Poor things, they both had a rough adventure, though I'm sure each went into it feeling a lot more 'big and bad' than they really are/were.

Exciting moment missed #3: While having Family Home Evening tonight Chris and I were sitting on the floor with Lynlee, who was rolling around and playing with her toys (and talking loudly). We looked at her and giggled while she screamed and growled one of the times, looked back at our paper, and then Chris stopped and said, "Did you put her like that?" I looked and saw our little girl sitting where she had been laying a few seconds earlier. SITTING! She hasn't sat up on her own (to our knowledge) yet. How did I - you get the point by now :)

I think I better start paying more attention!

On a different subject, school is growing great for Chris and me! We are loving our classes, Chris with his Ordinary Differential Equations and Astrophysics (don't worry, my eyebrows raise up too. Someone's gotta know the smart stuff though, right?!) and me with Trigon...well, Trig is going ok, but what I really love is my Criminal Investigations class. My teacher worked for the FBI for 25 years and his last name is Crook. How legit can you get? :) He's really a good teacher.
Ok, I've gotta have a quick moment of proud wifey time here. Chris is in his first astrophysics class this semester. In his class there are a lot of physics students that are close to graduating and pretty much just took this class as an elective to get remaining credits they need. Well they took their first test last week and got the results back today. The average on the test was 15; Chris got 30!!! He doubled the average on the test! I am very proud of him!
Lynlee is doing really well with her babysitters, which makes us happy. We have a hard time leaving her but she seems to have lots of fun and it's getting her around different people (and kids, she loves kids!). Today she was with Dana and Camryn. When we picked her up the three of them were just chilling on the front lawn and it was the cutest thing to see the little girls sitting there, patting each other and trying to steal the other girl's binkie. They are just 4 days apart in age so they are on the same learning levels and such. Chris couldn't resist snapping a picture of these sweet little girls when we got up to them.
they were both smiling up until the camera came out. this is still cute though - look at their cheeks! :)
A couple of weeks ago Lynlee and I were playing with my Galaxy Tab (I love that it has a front facing camera!) and we got a couple fun videos and pictures.

blurrry. my bad!
I got the hiccups while we were playing and every time I would hiccup she would laugh hysterically! It was so funny!

Have a great week everyone!

Dating Myself

I had a jaw-dropping grownup moment today. I demonstrated to a teenager my advanced age.
Now, I know what you're thinking: "22 years of age is still so young, you crazy lady!" Some of you may even be thinking "Uh, Marie, you know your husband is 6 years your senior, right?" because that is usually along the lines of what I think of if I even stop to contemplate for a second that I am "old." But just hear me out.
I was walking with a lovely young lady (age 15) today at Seven Peaks water park in Provo. We had just gotten off the "toilet bowl" water slide (it's really named the Vortex, but everybody who's anybody calls it the toilet bowl) and I really liked it so I wanted to jump up in the air with a fist pump to show my enjoyment (please tell me someone remembers this from Roller Coaster Tycoon!). Anyways, the whole point is she had no idea what Roller Coaster Tycoon is. What?!
Ok older person moment #2: something reminded me of the movie Space Jam and come to find out she doesn't know of the movie Space Jam.
How did this happen?? WHEN did this happen??
Oi.

On a happier note and speaking of getting older, Lynlee will be 7 months old on Monday! Wow.
On a sadder note, she has her first cold. It is miserable for her and for us to see her feel so icky. What a trooper though - she's been in a great mood all day anyways, smiling and talking still. Mostly she just has a lot of congestion that's making it hard for her to breathe (she's been snoring some the last night or two) and is really low on energy. This makes her extra cuddly and I can't say I don't hate this part, though I do hope she gets feeling better super soon!

almost everything a sick little girl could ask for
Aaand just because it's been awhile here are a few other pictures we've taken recently.

Daddy caught her talking, not too hard to do these days :)
Lynlee LOVES the kitties. She always chats it up to them
She wasn't too sure about it when Auntie M first came home from NYC, but they are quickly becoming best buds
showing Jim her other toy and very loudly explaining how it works
more talking. literally almost every recent picture we have of her she's in the middle of a sentence
haha ok so she has a huge frown in this picture but she's actually EXTREMELY happy - she's very focused on the opening song to The Lion King, which she is so in love with
it's lay on Jim time yay! (sorry for the creepy red-eye)
i love this candid shot Daddy got
